Spotify Premium’s promise on always being ad-free is what drives subscribers to keep paying for their memberships each month, but KFC has somehow found a loophole to slip an advert in there.
Partnering with advertising agency Memac Ogilvy from Dubai, KFC Middle East slipped advertising into “where no one has advertised before,” Spotify Premium, to promote its limited-edition double chicken patty Kentucky Burger.
Instead of interrupting tracks in a similar fashion to the commercials in Spotify’s basic service, KFC teamed up with three major artists from the region—Flipperachi, Moh Flow, and Shébani—to place imagery of Kentucky Burgers in their cover photos, bios, profile pictures and events.
The artists’ playlists also sneakily nudged customers into enjoying the new menu item with song titles spelling out, “Discover, New, Kentucky, Burger, Come & Visit, KFC. Get It, Before It’s Too Late.”
By clicking on the artists’ events locations, listeners were additionally directed to the nearest KFC outlets.
“Through this campaign, KFC opens up a new path to creativity and once again demonstrates that there is nothing stopping it from delivering finger lickin’ good fried chicken to its customers,” Nicolas López and Fernando Montero of Memac Ogilvy explained in a press release.
Haha now that’s clever advertising! @Spotify claims no ads on Spotify Premium, but looks like @kfcarabia still managed to make their way in! @SpotifyArabia least it’s uninterrupted and finger lickin’ good at the same time! #advertisingthatworks #spotify #kfc pic.twitter.com/JcV6YRgOdp
