If you’re one for classics and don’t buy into trends, PANTONE’s color predictions for fall and winter 2020 to 2021 could be your cup of tea. For the chillier part of the year, the color standard recommends hues that transcend seasons, keeping in line with consumers’ growing desire for all-inclusive, long-lasting, and genderless looks.
While the company’s trend forecast for New York Fashion Week fall 2020 is still highlighted by 10 top swatches and four classic tones, what makes it different this year is that it was put together with the concepts of mixing-and-matching and longevity in mind. The seasonal report features color recommendations that serve more as subtle nudges than yardsticks.
Fashion enthusiasts, designers and brands are encouraged to experiment with the report’s leading colors: a warm Amberglow, seductive Samba, practical Sandstone and bright Green Sheen, as well as the Color of the Year, Classic Blue.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of PANTONE Color Institute, explained, “Rather than saying to them, ‘No, this is it—here are the five top colors—end of story…’ I want them to reach out further than that, because people do have to feel comfortable in what they wear. You also have to give them permission to experiment a bit.”
To start off, you can “set off” the warmer tones with “the cool of Classic Blue,” said Eiseman. Then there are the four prominent neutrals—Almond Oil, Blue Depths, Sleet and Military Olive—that give you more legroom to get creative without leaving your comfort zone.
With this palette, people with minimal and bold tastes alike are handed evergreen and sustainable options made for layering, upcycling, and lasting multiple lives.
