Google could be working on a new operating system called ‘Pigweed’, as suggested by a recent trademark filing for the name.
The application, filed on 31 January with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), was discovered by Redditor Igats, who’s known for uncovering notable trademark registrations.
The trademark is for a “computer operating software.” Unfortunately, that’s all the information that is publicly available at the moment.
It’s possible that ‘Pigweed’ is another name for Google’s forthcoming Fuchsia operating system, as according to 9to5Google, the other only time that the name surfaced was in a proposed code change. The word “pigweed” was used before being switched back to “fuchsia.”
However, this isn’t concrete evidence that Fuchsia and Pigweed are one and the same. 9to5Google explained that the developer who made the edit is involved in several Google projects, and could have made a typo.
As for what the quirky moniker means, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden describes it as a type of edible weed. Some species, when fully grown, dry out and become tumbleweeds.
