Fans all over the world poured their hearts out for Kobe Bryant, whose life was suddenly cut short from a helicopter crash on 26 January. Tributes for the basketball legend included fashionable homages and murals.
Despite the presumably well intentions behind one Kobe Bryant-themed painting at the wall of a Marathon Gas station in Indianapolis, the artwork was removed following brutal criticism.
According to Black Indy Live, internet users lamented about its lack of resemblance to Bryant, as well as questioned the portrayal of bushy underarm hair on the character. The mural’s aesthetic was also likened to the drawing capabilities of a child.
“Face is terrible, armpit jungle is terrible and jersey [is] wide AF,” one disgruntled social media user commented.
The mural has since been painted over in purple, though a faint outline and some semblance of a yellow jersey are still visible. The artist behind the work is still unknown.
Whoever painted this on the side of the marathon on 38th and highschool road 🗣 Count your 🤬ing days b🤬h!! You killed Kobe all over again. I just took this pic. Smh
