Pope Francis is hoping to dispel evil artificial intelligence and potentially harmful up-and-coming technologies like facial recognition. The Vatican has since collaborated with Microsoft and IBM to put together a doctrine calling for the ethical and moral use of AI.
The Rome Call for AI Ethics document, first picked up by Reuters, details that AI should “focus not on technology,” but “the good of humanity and of the environment.” AI experts are also urged to strive to fulfill the “needs of those who are most vulnerable.”
A set of “algor-ethics”—described as the “fundamental elements of good innovation”—call for transparency (“AI systems must be explainable”); inclusion (“all individuals can be offered the best possible conditions to express themselves and develop”); responsibility (“those who design and deploy the use of AI must proceed with responsibility and transparency”); impartiality (“do not create or act according to bias”); reliability; security and privacy (“must work securely and respect the privacy of users”).
The doctrine also advises for the implementation of regulations surrounding potentially abusive technologies, such as facial recognition.
While AI is often used for security purposes, research has found that some AI is trained with racial and gender bias, and could possibly be more detrimental than helpful. In recent times, people have also been harnessing deepfake technology for political exploitations and inethical adult content.
The full doctrine, endorsed by IBM and Microsoft, can be found below.
