The spread of the novel coronavirus has dragged beer brand Corona Extra with it, no thanks to its name symbolizing the sun’s crown.
However, despite reports that its sales and brand image had taken a hit in the wake of COVID-19 scares, Constellation Brands, owner of Corona Extra, has reaffirmed that the purported negative impressions are “unfounded.”
In fact, sales of Corona Extra beer have risen by five percent for the latest four-week period in the US, Constellation Brands shared in a press release. In spite of shares dipping in New York for a moment, the company quickly jumped back up and even “nearly doubled” its 52-week trend.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by this terrible virus and we hope efforts to more fully contain it gain traction soon,” addressed Constellation Brands CEO and president Bill Newlands.
He also denounced skewed poll results by PR agency 5WPR, which claimed that 38 percent of 737 respondents said they “would not buy Corona under any circumstances now.” However, the agency failed to mention that many of the survey participants didn’t like the taste of the beer, and only four percent of regular drinkers said they would quit the beverage after coronavirus scares.
“There is no question that Corona beer is suffering because of the coronavirus,” the agency’s CEO Ronn Torossian purported. “Could one imagine walking into a bar and saying ‘Hey, can I have a Corona?’ or ‘Pass me a Corona.’”
