WhatsApp users have been chivvying the messaging app to roll out a dark mode for some time now, and it has finally granted their wishes—but not without launching a commercial poking fun at users without the much-belated feature.
Over the coming days, both Android and iOS users will be able to enjoy the glare-free WhatsApp, which is designed to “reduce eye strain in low light environments.”
WhatsApp’s dark mode enhances readability with text that stands out and a color palette in line with the default dark modes of iPhones and Android phones.
To drive home dark mode’s ability to “prevent those awkward moments where your phone lights up the room,” WhatsApp posted an advert showing the struggles of being faced with blinding lights in the dark, seemingly portraying users’ complaints about being blinded when texting at night.
iOS 13 and Android 10 users can access the dark mode simply by enabling it in their system settings. Those on Android 9 and older can switch it on by heading over to “WhatsApp Settings,” then “Chats,” “Theme” and finally, “Dark.”
The spot follows WhatsApp’s first-ever campaign in February depicting a real-life tragedy at Carnival.
