Best-selling novelist Stephen King has shared an audio excerpt of his 1978 book, The Stand, which details how he imagines the global flu spreads worldwide.
King posted the chilling clip on Twitter with the caption, “Chapter Eight of The Stand. This is how it works. Heed.” The chapter goes on to explain how a virus could spread across the nation.
It starts with the character in the book who had passed the illness to more than 40 people during a workday, and how that could escalate and end up infecting thousands of others.
He offered a little hope at the end by reminding that COVID-19 is not “as lethal as the superflu.”
