This is the time to stay home and catch up on your favorite shows or dive into a new game—it’s actually the responsible thing to do. To encourage gamers to do what they do best now, Sony has launched a ‘Play At Home’ project to help them pass time during self-isolation.
The campaign arrives with two initiatives. Firstly, Sony is starting a US$10 million fund for smaller independent game developers and studios whose finances have been hit as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company will release more details about this subsidy soon.
For players, Sony is releasing two PlayStation 4 games for free, namely Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey. The titles will be free for PS4 users in most regions, no matter if they own a PlayStation Plus membership, between 15 April at 8pm PDT and 5 May 2020 8pm PDT.
The popular Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection by Naughty Dog actually contains three games, including Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
Journey by Thatgamecompany is a “beautiful, celebrated adventure” with an element of mystery. “The game’s life-affirming message is timeless, and perhaps more important now than ever before,” PlayStation describes in its blog.
PS4 gamers in Germany and China will have access to a different bundle, which comprises Knack 2 and Journey.
It remains to be known if Sony will release more games for free after 5 May. The company, however, asks for the understanding of US and European players during this time, as game downloads might be slower to “preserve access for everyone.”
