After introducing paper KitKat packaging that doubles as origami crafts, Nestlé is deep-diving into an anti-plastic waste cause by bringing marine animals to the forefront.
Nestlé Japan has just released an ‘Ocean Salt’ KitKat flavor with four paper packaging variations that encourage consumers to turn them into origami versions of sea animals, namely the sea turtle, earless seal, dolphin, and manta ray.
The new flavor comprises a premium white chocolate base blended with sea salt that is sourced from the Seto Inland Sea, according to grape Japan.
Nestlé is also donating JP¥10 from each unit sold to Zero Waste Japan, a nonprofit working on new manufacturing and distribution techniques to support “zero waste living.”
If you wish to embark on your own sea animal origami project but can’t access these wrappers, you can still follow the instructions here to craft a marine creature using paper you have at home.
The sea animal-inspired packaging is the latest in Nestlé’s campaign to make 100-percent of its packaging recyclable or reusable. Nestlé is the world’s largest producer of packaged food, and its inventive efforts are key to helping to drive down waste on Earth.
Similarly, Samsung recently introduced new box designs that can be turned into cat houses and shelves after being opened.
