If you haven’t been going to the dentist due to the coronavirus outbreak or for other reasons, you can now get a checkup at home quickly and for free.
Pearlii, an investor-backed dentaltech startup from Melbourne, Australia, has launched an app that checks your teeth using AI image processing to scan dental photos captured simply using your smartphone camera.
Apart from obviously being pain-free, the app aims to offer accessible and regular oral healthcare services to all. Pearlii’s founder, Kyle Turner, said he came from a lower-socioeconomic household and is stuck with teeth problems that could have been prevented had he been able to go for regular checkups.
“I’m now scrupulous about my oral health, but a lot of damage was already done,” he explained. “With Pearlii, I'm trying to prevent this [from] happening to anyone else.”
“Healthy teeth shouldn’t be a privilege and no kid should have to grow up with bad teeth,” Turner continued. “A free dental screening and education app like Pearlii has the potential to shift the landscape, spotting problems earlier and boosting oral health literacy.”
The tool utilizes machine learning to check teeth for issues like tooth decay, calculus, or gingivitis. It is also secure, using the same technology as bank apps, and promises that data will be fully encrypted and stored securely.
At present, the app is still in beta mode and only available for Android users through the Google Play store. The company said an iOS version should be rolled out in the coming weeks.
In time, Pearlii will also be able to look out for more oral diseases, include extensive educational content provided by dentists, and track how much your teeth have whitened or straightened. Ultimately, the startup hopes for Pearlii to become a comprehensive tool that even lets you book dentist appointments. Download it here.
