David Guetta is facing backlash after remixing a speech by Martin Luther King Jr. to honor George Floyd.
The DJ has been hosting live-streamed events to raise funds for coronavirus relief charities, and had amassed US$670,000 at the time he decided to pay tribute to Floyd.
“I knew we were going to do this and I made a special record, in honor of George Floyd. I hope we can see more unity and more peace when things are already so difficult,” Guetta said. He gave a shoutout to Floyd’s family and played a track that sampled King’s famous I Have A Dream speech.
The song went viral immediately, but wasn’t well-received among internet users. One Twitter user fired up, “We’ve found it. The whitest way to react to racism.”
“Yes, David Guetta, I’m sure that’s exactly what George Floyd would have wanted… an EDM banger sampling Martin Luther King,” another user said.
