Sex scenes in Hollywood films will reportedly be replaced with CGI in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
As Hollywood looks to resuming production on 12 June, filmmakers will have to abide social distancing measures in the foreseeable future. According to the New York Post, actors will be given hand-washing tutorials and attend auditions behind Plexiglass with “coronavirus compliance officers” present, while backstage crew will wear masks and visors.
The instructions were published in a 22-page document from the film editors’ trade association, which also states that “close contact moments” will have to be “rewritten, abandoned,” or produced using CGI.
The document was presented to New York and California governors to ensure Hollywood would be “ready for action” after the three-month lockdown.
Fighting scenes, too, will be put on hold as they have a higher risk of transmission.
“Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than 12 June 2020, and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations,’ the California Department of Public Health told the Los Angeles Times.
Hollywood studios quickly adapted to the new normal of filmmaking by turning to virtual-reality technology back in April. This way, crew members could create digital sets while being quarantined at home.
Epic Games chief technology officer Kim Libreri said that adopting techniques frequently used by the gaming industry can get “you into production quickly.”
