Google redefines the cliché, “A picture speaks a thousand words,” by envisioning complete 3D depth in videos. Its impressive new experiment features 46 cameras synced simultaneously to create “light field videos” that invite you to enjoy footage in numerous perspectives—even letting you explore objects and corners as if you were walking freely around them.
The massive configuration sees the cameras shaped into a giant, all-seeing eye. Footage recorded by the equipment is stitched together in real-time so you can get up close and personal with items caught in frame. Google will reveal the technology in detail at the SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference, according to TechCrunch.
While typical VR-enabled videos might let viewers immerse themselves in 3D landscapes to certain extents, they don’t offer near all-encompassing perspectives. In comparison, Google’s photorealistic Deep View videos closely mimic real-life interactions as videos are rendered in 3D.
The technique can be previewed through your Chrome browser via numerous videos posted by Google, although they’ll likely provide the best results when browsed through VR equipment.
