On 23 June 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported up to at least 2.3 million coronavirus cases in the US. However, director of the CDC Dr Robert Redfield projects that the number could be over 20 million.
“Our best estimate right now is that for every case that’s reported, there are actually 10 other infections,” Redfield told reporters on Thursday, per NBC News.
The number is based on blood samples collected in the US to check for the presence of antibodies to the virus. The CDC found that for every confirmed case of COVID-19, there were 10 more people with the antibodies.
The director referred to the proteins in the blood samples, which shows whether a person’s immune system had fought off the virus previously. The samples, however, did not come only from antibody testing but also from donated blood at blood banks and other lab tests of blood.
With Redfield’s estimation, there could likely be at least 23 million COVID-19 cases in the country at the moment.
As of June 23: More than 2.3 million #COVID19 cases have been reported in the U.S., with 40 states and jurisdictions reporting more than 10,000 cases. See how many cases have been reported in your state or county here: https://t.co/wiuFBKR3Uh pic.twitter.com/UbfeLUso6m
