Facebook has been criticized for the way it has handled hate speech, harassment, and misinformation on its platform, and for not being proactive in taking measurements to prevent such content from appearing to the masses.
Propelled by the anti-racism protests in the US, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has launched a #StopHateForProfit boycott urging brands to stop advertising on Facebook in July.
Several companies, including Ben & Jerry’s and outdoor gear companies Patagonia and The North Face, have decided to join in on the ad boycott.
Now, Verizon has hopped on board, making it the biggest brand to participate in the movement. The company will pull its advertisements on Facebook for the month of July to stand in solidarity against hate speech and divisive content.
Thank you @Verizon for joining the campaign to #StopHate4Profit
