Celebrities whose merchandise have been widely ridiculed might only need to look to their fans for help. One Katy Perry stan is being applauded all over the internet for his attempted cover redesign of Katy Perry’s newest studio album, Smile—even receiving the seal of approval from the singer herself.
The original album art, shown below, features a solemn Perry with a clown nose on, resting her elbows atop the album’s name, “Smile,” which is stylized to appear as a grin.

Peter, a 19-year-old self-taught graphic artist, decided to put a new spin to the already-whimsical artwork by transforming Perry’s flamboyant blue outfit into a circus tent à la American Horror Story, and then adding fireworks and a rollercoaster in the backdrop.

Since then, his refreshing redesign has been retweeted over 12,400 times and liked by nearly 84,000 people on Twitter. It even has its own petition on Change.org, created by fans who fell in love with the art in hopes for Perry to replace the existing cover design.
The Twitter user, who prefers to go only by his first name and his online handle @FAMEKILLED, told Insider that it wasn’t his intention to rework the album art, “But once I saw the hint of clown and circus visuals, I saw a potential… [of it being] on a bigger scale.” He added that it took him “about one or two days” to complete the reimagination using Adobe Photoshop.
The fan art was praised by famous names like rapper Iggy Azalea, who remarked, “This is so good!” Of course, the ultimate validation came from Perry.
“Calling you for the next record!” the Smile singer responded, sharing the incredible concept on her Twitter account. “OH, I’M ALL FOR THAT,” the fan excitedly replied, though he later told the publication that he didn’t think Perry’s invitation was a serious one.
The young artist said he is currently finalizing his entry for Lady Gaga’s art challenge with Adobe asking fans to interpret their own Chromatica for US$10,000.
In the long term, he hopes to be able to study art in college and “become a creative director for artists,” describing his role as a fan to be a bonus since he’ll be able to better understand people with similar interests. “I think being a fan makes you know more of what the fans want and expect,” he shared.
