Ricky Gervais spoke about his two-season sitcom The Office on the BBC during an interview with Times of London Radio.
Gervais’ show ran from 2001 to 2003, and then inspired the mega-hit NBC series of the same title from 2005 to 2013. However, he felt that the sitcom wouldn’t be aired now because of the current climate.
The comedian explained that the show was about being different, sex, race and “all things that people fear to even be discussed or talking about now in case they say the wrong thing and they’re ‘canceled.’”
He theorized that the show would not run now because “people have lost that sense of irony and context.”
He also explained how the concept of free speech might have also been taken out of context. “Some people think freedom of speech means, I should be able to say anything without consequences, and it doesn’t mean that,” he said during the interview.
When asked whether he was “cancel-proof” or not, Gervais said that he would not be cancel-proof because he simply doesn’t care. “I’m not cancel-proof, I just don’t care. I’m cancel-proof in the sense that I’ve got enough money. If they started taking things back, then I’d worry,” he said.
