Apple settled a lawsuit early this year after it secretly slowed down older iPhones.
The company agreed to pay a US$500 million settlement after the original lawsuit was filed in late 2017. Apple admitted that it had tweaked the iOS software to slow down the performance of older smartphones to preserve battery life without informing users.
Now, the company is providing US$25 to those who were affected by the issue.
To qualify for the payment, you need to own one of the following phones: An iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus or iPhone SE, which ran on iOS 10.2.1 or later before 21 December 2017, or an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus that ran on iOS 11.2 or later before 21 December 2017.
If you meet the criteria, head over to this website and click on “Submit a claim online” by 6 October 2020. You will need to provide your phone’s serial number to complete the claim. Once you’ve submitted it, you will receive a claim ID and confirmation code in an email.
Also, do note that by submitting this claim, you will forfeit your right to sue Apple independently. Users might get US$25 for each handset, but the amount could rise or fall depending on how many people apply for this payout.
Users can have the US$25 deposited into their bank accounts. However, do not expect the amount to appear anytime soon as the hearing will only take place on 4 December, which will determine if the settlement will be approved. According to the website, “the appeal process can take time, perhaps more than a year.”
