Disney Pixar has announced a dreamy new movie to tug at your heartstrings in 2021, one that’s bound to have you reminiscing childhood friendships and irreplaceable summer memories.
Luca is an animated coming-of-age story set in a “beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera,” where a boy named Luca and his newfound friend have “an unforgettable summer” filled with “gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides.”
The studio unveiled the news on its digital channels along with a vibrant early illustration for the movie, which shows the two gleeful friends jumping off the edge of a cliff against a beautiful landscape.
However, there’s more beneath the surface—Luca is really a sea monster who lives in another world located within these waters.
In a statement, shared via GamesRadar+, Casarosa reflected on how the fantastical tale is “a deeply personal story” for him.
“[It’s] not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship,” he said.
“Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become, and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca.”
As teased in the concept art, be prepared to also get swept off your feet by picturesque seascapes of the Italian Riviera.
According to Disney’s release schedule, Luca is planned for an 18 June 2021 rollout. Preceding it in the Pixar schedule will be Soul, which is poised to open on 20 November 2020.
