Tesla CEO Elon Musk is well aware that the Sci-Fi-inspired design of the Cybertruck can be too unorthodox for many.
Unlike what most automakers would do, Tesla did not perform any consumer research before introducing the futuristic model, so Musk told Automotive News that Tesla has a “fallback strategy” should the Cybertruck turn out to be a “complete failure” come its scheduled shipping period next year.
When that happens, Tesla will be prepared to build a “normal”-looking pickup truck, Musk elaborated.
“I wasn’t super worried about [failing] because if it turns out nobody wants to buy a weird-looking truck, we’ll build a normal truck, no problem,” he said.
However, demand for the Cybertruck picked up (no pun intended) tremendously as soon as it launched, with Tesla receiving over 250,000 reservations for the vehicle as of November. It’s worth noting, though, that customers can still rescind their pre-orders and retrieve a small portion of their down payments, as deposits for the pickup are refundable.
Musk also shared recently that it’s possible for the exterior of the already unconventional Tesla Cybertruck to be color-changing, so there’ll evidently be a market for drivers who would prefer a more ordinary design.
