Can you spot the deepfake video from the real one?
Neuropsychologist Dr Simon Cropper from the University of Melbourne has organized a challenge called ‘Fake Out’, where people are quizzed to pick out real videos from fake ones.
This quiz is designed to teach people about deepfakes in an entertaining way. It lets people engage with different examples of manipulated media, allowing them to familiarize with new technology that has gotten eerily advanced.
Deepfake technology, which has been around for a while, could be a potential course of online disinformation.
Dr Cropper told News.com.au that Facebook also created its own deepfake challenge to test whether artificial intelligence can detect the manipulated videos. It found that computers were able to spot the fake ones 65-percent of the time. Dr Cropper’s research aimed to see if humans could score better.
So far, humans have been able to spot an average of 70-percent of the fake videos. “We are really good at this stuff and seem to be much better than machines,” he said.
