McDonald’s burgers appear to have a reputation for defying the laws of time, and now and then you’ll come across footage from customers showing decades-old menu items that are seemingly still in mint condition. It doesn’t look good on the chain; looking the same 20 years since your prime years would be considered a good thing when you’re a celebrity, but not when you’re a burger.
One related video which has made its rounds of late shows a McDonald’s hamburger and fries that appear incredibly preserved since they were purchased a purported 24 years ago.
Swarmed with too many of these cases, McDonald’s finally decided to put the “myth” to rest. In a new press release, the Golden Arches addressed the TikTok video without mentioning it, reaffirming, “In the right environment, our burgers, like most other foods, could decompose. But, in order to decompose, you need certain conditions – specifically moisture.”
In this instance, the grandmother of the user who posted the viral video had stored the meal in a closet, suggesting that the burger and fries were kept away from moisture.
“Without sufficient moisture – either in the food itself or the environment – bacteria and mold may not grow and therefore, decomposition is unlikely,” McDonald’s elaborated. “So if food is or becomes dry enough, it is unlikely to grow mold or bacteria or decompose.”
Don’t believe it? McDonald’s hinted that customers try this at home with food cooked in the household. “Food prepared at home that is left to dehydrate could see similar results,” it added.
The chain also urged customers to “look closely” at imagery of burgers posted by people claiming the menu items do not decompose. “The burgers you are seeing are likely dried out and dehydrated, and by no means ‘the same as the day they were purchased,” McDonald’s said.
The restaurant concluded its message by sharing that its beef patties are prepared “only with 100-percent USDA-inspected beef,” and assured that no preservatives or fillers are added to them.
“The only thing ever added is a touch of salt and pepper on the grill,” McDonald’s reiterated.
