Amid life-threatening challenges and questionable “hacks,” there are a number of wholesome trends on TikTok that are worth your attention. One delightful version sees young women pulling their pants down to flaunt their natural tummies to remind viewers that a lot of the imagery they see online is artificial.
Internet users are feeling empowered by a challenge started by female social media influencers that adds one more aspect to ab-baring dances commonplace on the video-sharing platform: natural fat. The online chain seems to have been started by TikToker Lizzy Khang, and has since been recreated by users by the likes of 27-year-old Carolina Gurdian, 16-year-old Brooklynne Webb, and 16-year-old Sienna Gomez.
“We all have a belly, especially in quarantine,” Gurdian told BuzzFeed News in an interview. “We’re normalizing the fact that being midsize or having a belly doesn’t mean you’re unhealthy,” she added. And while young females are often told that toned tummies equate to better health, the TikToker said she has “never been healthier” nor “bigger in my life.”
Webb, who has 3.2 million followers on the platform, said those who pioneered the challenge “looked so happy and positive” and “unapologetically themselves.”
A few of the young females being interviewed shared the sentiment that one of TikTok’s upsides is that videos, which are the type of media posted on the social network, aren’t as easily editable as photos, empowering many to show off their authentic sides.
“Instead of thinking I need to edit myself, other people get to see who I really am,” Gomez told the media outlet.
