The much-revered Bauhaus movement has been hailed by design lovers for marrying art and functionality as one. Now, an IKEA rug inspired by the modernist style is wiening over the hearts of mainstream audiences, too.
IKEA Australia’s new handwoven SPANGSBRO rug, priced at A$399 (US$291), is described by the furniture giant to be “inspired by modernist Bauhaus design.”
The company also mentions that the rug’s flat weave and warm hues work “just as well under the dining table as in the living room”—maybe if you’re a nudist.
Filthy-minded customers apparently have the idea that the geometric pattern is made up of phalluses, and just cannot sweep their dirty thoughts about it under the carpet. The fact that the shapes are weaved with nude colors isn’t helping.
One shopper, who shared an image of the rug on a product review-focused Facebook group, zeroed in on its supposedly X-rated appearance and asked, “Is it just me?”
Others are more straightforward. “I asked my partner… his reply was ‘d**ks,’” one Facebook user comments. Another simply calls it a “penis rug.”
On a serious note, the rug is sustainably crafted with wool sourced under “strict demands on animal welfare, land management and traceability.” The material is also moisture-wicking, and adjusts its temperature depending on whether the atmosphere is warm or cool, according to IKEA Australia.
