Donald Trump’s campaign has used a photo featuring Russian fighter jets in the background for an ad titled ‘Support the Troops’.
The ad, which was made by the Trump Make America Great Again Committee, featured five soldiers—some carrying assault rifles—walking as Russian MiG-jets flew over them.
Pierre Sprey, who helped to design the F-16 and A-10 planes for the US Air Force, told Politico that the planes featured were “definitely a MiG-29.” Ruslan Pukhov, Director of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies in Moscow, also confirmed that there were MiG-29s and AK-47s in the photo.
The AK-47 rifle is a standard rifle used by Russians, while the MiG-29 jet was developed by the Russians during the Cold War to counter American jets. Sprey also pointed out the distinctive features that matched the MiG, which include the angle of the aircraft’s tail and spacing of the engines.
The image used in the ad is a stock photo found on Shutterstock, labeled as, “Military silhouettes of soldiers and airforce against the backdrop of sunset sky.”
