Judging from the popularity of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it wouldn’t be so surprising for the game to make its way into history books as one of the core coping mechanisms for the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Nintendo Switch game places you in crippling debt under the arguable dictatorship of Tom Nook the tanuki, but somehow, bringing adorable animal characters in the picture makes the struggle actually alluring. The game has gotten T-Pain and his wife Amber Najm hook, line and sinker, to the point that the rapper has released a rap completely based on Animal Crossing.
The track, titled Nooks Bells, doesn’t hide its muse. T-Pain takes on the role of a greedy and authoritarian Tom Nook, who calls playing the game a “full-time job” and continually drills the line, “Them Bells ain’t gonna earn themselves.”
The accompanying music video also features Twitch streamer Cardboard Cowboy as the human villager, who just about loses his soul developing the island. All the while, bells ominously sound off in the background in reference to the game’s currency.
The track seems to capture New Horizons players’ frustration about not fulfilling enough and that insatiable need to perfect their virtual island. This is underlined by the brilliant lyric, “Keep playin’ with me, I’ll have you swimmin’ with c-plusses (read: seabasses).”
