The wildfires tormenting Northern California have affected around 80 percent of homes in a town called Malden. Elon Musk’s SpaceX has stepped up to offer free internet to its 200 residents via Starlink, its broadband network from space.
Earlier this week, Washington’s emergency management department posted a photo showing a Starlink satellite terminal in the city. “Malden, WA is an area where fiber and most of the town burned down. Without this equipment, it would have been much harder for folks to get internet in that area,” the post’s caption read.
Musk responded to the tweet, stating that his company is focusing on emergency responders and locations without any internet connectivity.
SpaceX has set up seven terminals for emergency responders to use for free. The units are also being used as public Wi-Fi to those living in the affected areas.
Glad SpaceX could help! We are prioritizing emergency responders & locations with no Internet connectivity at all.
