Job resource site Zippia has analyzed over three million
résumés to find the strangest things people have put in their applications in hopes of attracting the employers’ attention.
The site shares that those residing in New Jersey tend to list “Trump” in their résumés, likely because most people working for Trump-owned properties live in the state. Other terms more common in New Jersey résumés are “napping” and “husband.”
Marketing manager at Zippia Kathy Morris also reveals that pop culture terms such as “Dungeons and Dragons” and “Kardashian” were also found in people’s résumés. Strangely, the term “porn” has appeared in professional applications too.
Since many companies want to find a “cultural fit,” they would like job-seekers to tell more about themselves to see if they would vibe with the team. This has prompted people to quote hobbies they believe would impress prospective employers.
“The company may have specifically requested your hobbies and mentioned wanting to find a ‘culture fit’. You’ll hem and haw, and scramble before putting down some interests you’re hoping will intrigue the hiring manager,” Morris says.
Morris adds that job-seekers need to know their audiences. If someone is applying for a job that has board game gatherings, it might indeed be wise to add “Dungeons and Dragons” in the résumé as an interest. “I would recommend you look at the job posting and really look at what they’re looking for. Your résumé should be a response to the job posting and customize,” she explains.
Morris also advises not to create a mass résumé. Companies are going to value certain skills and experiences above others. Therefore, consider how to best present your skills for each role you apply for.
