Australian comedian Celeste Barber has called out Instagram after she was alerted that one of her photos—a parody of a Candice Swanepoel photo—had “breached” its community standards, despite her being more covered up than the original.
Barber has been creating hilarious parodies of model photos on her account, taking aim at unrealistic beauty standards and showing what real women’s bodies look like.
She recently shared a side-by-side photo of her parody and a picture of Candice Swanepoel, writing, “When you finally sit down and your kid asks for a drink.”
In the original, Swanepoel is seen throwing her head back while clutching her breasts. Both pictures have the same body parts exposed, though Barber has panties on in her version.
Unfortunately, Instagram flagged Barber’s picture, preventing users from sharing it, while Swanepoel’s post remained shareable.
Her photo reportedly went against “Instagram’s community guidelines on nudity or sexual activity.” The Guardian reported that Barber later shared a screenshot she received from a fan, writing, “Hey Instagram, sort out your body-shaming standards, guys. It’s 2020. Catch up.”
Undeterred, Barber posted another side-by-side photo, this time of her next to Bella Hadid, with the caption, “Oh hi, just out here checking on your double standards.”
Instagram has apologized to Barber, and a representative has responded that the incident “shouldn’t have happened.”
“This shouldn’t be happening, and we are committed to addressing any inequity on our platforms,” the spokesperson said. “We expect to update our breast covering policies very soon, to make sure all body types are treated fairly.”
