An artificial intelligence software that goes by the name of ‘GANksy’ has created 256 masterpieces that match the aesthetics of “a certain street artist.”
The AI’s creator, Matt Round, refused to specify which artist inspired him to create the program, though its name may offer a clue. The digital works also seem to reflect the creations of the elusive street artist, Banksy.
When asked about the similarities between the creations from the AI and those of Banksy, Round simply said that there wasn’t anything resembling the street artist’s “work in the output.” He also pointed out the difference in tone and style in the AI’s production.
“Hopefully [Banksy] would appreciate it as a fun, creative project,” Round added at the end.
The project was developed through a form of computerized machine-learning framework known as a GAN (generative adversarial network), which was trained for five days with hundreds of artworks until it was able to generate its own work in the likeness of the original samples.
Round has put up the 256 works on sale on experimental website VOLE.wtf !?, allowing buyers to get exclusive ownership of GANksy-signed digital files. Prices for the pieces started at £1 (US$1.30) and continued to increase by £1 after every purchase.
GANksy buyers can now optionally have a name & link displayed, to show off their AMAZINGLY GOOD taste in art (if you’ve already bought one & want your name added, get in touch) https://t.co/4HEPH6YCSm pic.twitter.com/oSCdsSnxj6
