Netflix has garnered quite a reputation for canceling shows after only one season.
Fans have noticed that the streaming platform has canceled a lot of shows than other networks, but Global Head of TV Bela Bajaria and co-CEO Ted Sarandos beg to differ.
During the Paley International Council Summit, Bajaria revealed that Netflix’s renewal rate is around 67 percent, which is supposedly on par with the “industry’s standard.” She cited The Crown and the comedy Grace and Frankie as examples of Netflix series that have been renewed for multiple seasons.
“We also do make a large amount of first season shows, which sometimes feels like we have more first season cancelations but if you look at the renewal rate it’s really strong,” she told Deadline.
A report released by Bloomberg from 2019 supports Bajaria’s claim, indicating that the platform’s cancelation rate is in line with other television platforms.
However, fans continue to feel upset with the loss of certain TV shows, especially when they got booted after the first season. It doesn’t help that Netflix doesn’t release the viewing numbers for every one of its shows, leaving viewers confused.
Sarandos, though, cited the reason Netflix is judged so often by the cancelations is that it’s being “measured against the old way of doing things.” He felt that a show could be successful even if it only has one season.
Sarandos explained that the business model has to be tweaked to fit in “this new age of television.”
“I think many shows can be a success for being exactly what they are and you could tell that story in two seasons or one season or five seasons. I think it gets talked about so much because it’s measured against the old way of doing things,” he added.
Netflix seems to cancel a shit ton of shows without any warning. So disappointing watching a series or two of something for it not to get a proper ending. (Glow, The OA, Sense8 to name a few)

Mindhunter is undoubtedly the best show on Netflix. It’s a mistake to cancel.

Whatever excuses Netflix had to cancel TBH and GLOW...it sounds like BS when other shows get renewed. https://t.co/8hEooBKRKs
