‘MeowTalk’ is a new app that aims to improve cat and human communication through translation.
To help you better identify your feline friend’s needs, the app lets you record a cat’s meows and purrs before matching it with nine universal basic intents like “I’m hungry” or “I’m in pain.”
MeowTalk doesn’t actually translate your pet’s sounds, but it aims to help you better understand its needs. With the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the app improves as you continue to use it.
The pet owner will first have to provide five to 10 examples of a specific meow from their cat to note its possible intentions. They can then finetune the meanings of each sound they believe to be accurate, and train the tool to recognize the cat’s specific vocalizations.
The app was created by former Amazon engineer Javier Sanchez, who is now at tech company Akvelon.
“You can train the MeowTalk app to learn your cat’s unique vocabulary of meows (cat talk) by telling the app what each meow means when your cat makes it,” the app’s description reads.
MeowTalk is downloadable for free on the App Store and on the Google Play Store, and full access to its functions will be available at US$0.99.
