Snapchat is rolling out a new section within its app called Spotlight. The new feature will allow users to watch an endless scroll of short vertical clips, much like TikTok’s feed.
The videos can be sent straight to Spotlight, or posted to ‘Our Story.’
The company stated that Spotlight is equipped with algorithms that will showcase personalized snaps to each user. It will do so by monitoring how long people spent watching the clips, if they were favorited or shared, and more.
TikTok also uses this similar system to display interesting content for its “For You” feed. However, TikTok only presents videos posted by public accounts unlike Snapchat, which will show snaps from users with both private and public profiles.
The snaps posted from private accounts will be featured without any attribution to the content, so users will not be able to interact with the creator or comment on the snaps.
Spotlight will display the users’ accounts when they opt for public profiles, allowing others to contact them directly as the Spotlight section does not include a public comment section.
Snapchat said that the snaps have to be vertical videos with sound up to 60 seconds in length to be featured on Spotlight.
The clips should be appropriate for a 13+ audience and include hashtag topics. The company also encourages users to utilize Snapchat’s creative tools like sounds, lenses, or GIFs for the posts.
The snaps should also use the licensed music available in Snapchat’s Sounds Library, and feature original content and not repurposed videos from other apps.
To prompt users to post content to Spotlight, Snapchat plans to reward those who produce top videos on the page.
The company announced that it will distribute US$1 million everyday to the users (16 years old and up) with leading content. It will take account of the total number of unique views per Snap in a day to determine the users who are eligible for the bonuses.
