This year, people have had more screen time than ever. As our entire lives have gone virtual, we’ve been turning to apps to make day-to-day rituals go by a lot more easily. And as tech giants have observed, this year’s theme is all about personal growth, reflection and productivity.
In line with Apple’s unveiling of its favorite and most-downloaded apps from the year, Google has revealed its best picks for content from the Play Store, based on editor and user favorites.
Google Play reflected in its new blog post that 2020 has “changed the way we all live, work, and go about the routines that keep us grounded… and many apps played a role in helping us find a path forward.” The best apps this year gave users more room to shine at work despite being cooped up between the same four walls practically every day, and helped them unwind and recharge at night for the next unpredictable day.
Undoubtedly, entertainment became more of an essential than a want. Users chose Disney+ as their overall favorite app and RPG Genshin Impact as their selected game of 2020. Incidentally, these two apps were also Apple’s selections for App and Game of the Year, showing that they were fundamental in helping families cope and escape from the constraints of the real world. Perhaps it was for this reason that Google Play witnessed a growing community of casual gamers with more varied preferences in genres than the years before.
