Clear Channel Outdoor has rejected a billboard order for downtown Minneapolis that featured an artist’s work of George Floyd being restrained by three police officers.
According to artist Donald Perlis, Clear Channel’s executive has sent him an email stating that the billboard artwork has been canceled as it “depicts acts of violence,” per Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Perlis’ oil painting of the same title has been displayed on a billboard in New York Times Square with the quote by Dalai Lama, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible” accompanying it.
The oil painting, entitled FLOYD, shows Floyd on the ground while being restrained by three officers as the fourth officer looks away. The artwork, which was scheduled to go up on 11 January, was also meant to feature a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. that read, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The art is sponsored by the George Floyd Billboard Committee.
Speaking about the cancelation, Perlis said that the artwork might be “inflammatory” to the public as it is currently a “hotbed issue” in Minneapolis. Perlis explained that while the painting featured a violent act, it did not present itself as a violent image.
