For the first time in Vogue Italia magazine’s history, humans are bowing out to give animals a spot in the limelight, both physically and digitally.
Its January 2021 issue, entitled The Animal Issue, will be fully dedicated to the animal kingdom and will feature seven vibrant collectible covers of lambs, wolves, panthers, mice and more.
The idea isn’t to paint a “consoling and domestic” picture, but to showcase a “multifaceted” ecosystem of “disquieting, sometimes even threatening” settings, explains Conde Nast.
With more time now being spent at home, Vogue Italia magazine hopes to revert the focus to the natural world and bring attention to the environmental emergency silently occurring alongside the COVID-19 pandemic. “[To put it] quite simply, the world does not revolve around humans,” Conde Nast’s communications team reminds.
“Animals do not exist for our purpose, nor as a function of what we would like them to be,” pens Emanuele Farneti, the editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia magazine. “It is almost too simple to stress how much we’ve been reminded of this by the effects of the coronavirus, by the way it came into existence and how it has impacted our lives, freeing up spaces that wildlife has at least temporarily reclaimed for itself. And it seems almost too obvious that the fashion industry, like any other economic activity, must ask itself where the limits lie in the exploitation of natural resources.”
The seven striking covers can be found below. You can find out more about The Animal Issue here.
