MAC Cosmetics customers have purported that MAC Cosmetics’ new Sims-themed makeup is essentially repackaged old products.
The brand recently released a nine-shade eyeshadow palette inspired by the life-simulation game The Sims. Priced at US$32, the palette is supposedly able to recreate “all the looks you love in the game.”
“Just dropped!” MAC Cosmetics announced in its official Instagram account. “Finally, you can twin with your Sims IRL with the limited-edition MAC Staring The Sims Eye Shadow x 9 palette.”
However, fans noticed that the colors in the palette have a neutral aesthetic, a far cry from the vibrant effects of the game. They also accused the brand of repacking its old eyeshadow colors into new boxes.
One customer expressed concern, saying, “This is a gorgeous neutral palette but really misses the mark on the Sims brand. Nothing about this feel Sims-inspired.”
The beauty brand, however, defended its palette, stating that The Sims and the MAC brand “have always been about inclusion and creating a fun interactive environment that allows you to be your true authentic self.”
Describing it as a “versatile palette,” the brand said the palette allows makeup beginners and experts to go from “natural to glam in one swipe.” The colors also complement the 12 diverse looks seen in The Sims, and they are catered to various face shapes and skin tones, it added.
However, Insider stated that the brand’s statement seemed to reference its previous collaboration with the Sims 4 video game. Also, beauty fans pointed out that the colors wouldn’t suit all skin tones. “The audacity of y’all to use a black woman to push this ashy ass palette. Laughable,” a Twitter user said.
Other beauty fans pointed out the lackluster packaging of the collaboration, while others claimed the brand repackaged its Solar Glow Times Nine palette, hence lacking colors and striking themed packaging.
The shades in The Sims palette are also similar to those of Solar Glow’s, and the colors are placed in the same layout with the same names, as well.
