Lady Gaga’s makeup brand Haus Laborataries has removed an advertisement after it has been accused of “triggering” those who have self-harmed before.
According to Today, the beauty brand uploaded a video on Instagram demonstrating its micro-tip liquid eyeliner as slashes on a model’s inner arm.
A screenshot shared by Today showed a person commenting, “That’s really triggering to me to be honest. Maybe you should reconsider how you want to present this… I’ve been through a lot and this really brings me back to when I was self-harming, and I’m only a year and a half clean.” Another person commented, “Why did you have to use it on the inside of the wrist?”
Other social media users pointed out that the advertisement should have come with a warning, with one saying, “I think you should use a trigger warning for self-harm on this, it really is triggering.”
The beauty brand was swift to take down its controversial advertisement, and later shared a different one to promote its kohl eyeliner.
Lady Gaga and Haus Laboratories have not addressed the criticism yet. The singer has been passionate about mental health. She started the Born This Way Foundation, which helps young people in crisis, so it could be surprising for some that her makeup brand would share an ad featuring images that might be deemed as hurtful.
If you, or someone you know, are self-harming, please seek help or talk to someone. One organization that might be helpful is the Crisis Text Line.
Dear @ladygaga your eyeliner bought you memories? Ok here my memory of a difficult times which I didn’t use a eyeliner! Thanks for the reminder! Unfollowed forever! @FoxNews @CNN @TheView @GMA @drinkhaus pic.twitter.com/MAlUg6Gqlc
