The beloved robot cat Doraemon has transported from the 22nd century to this era, and is fronting Gucci’s 2021 Chinese New Year collection while he’s at it.
In continuation of the Gucci x Doraemon capsule collection commemorating the Lunar New Year, the luxury fashion house has dressed the manga icon up in an adorable ox costume for the Year of the Ox, complete with horns and a tail.
Doraemon’s signature blue and red colors are dialed back to make way for a more neutral brown, white and gold outfit, a welcoming look for fans of the minimal.
As shown in the lookbook, the costumed Doraemon will appear on Gucci’s hoodies, caps, bags, wallets, and card cases. However, while Gucci’s garments of the usual Doraemon are available to shop now, the company has yet to release details about the ox-inspired designs.
Gucci will open popup locations and overhaul boutiques with Doraemon motifs from 20 January. That will perhaps be when you’ll be able to get your hands on the Year of the Ox pieces.
This year happens to be the manga cat’s 50th anniversary too, so it’s about time for a high-fashion upgrade.
