It’s no secret that Elon Musk plans to implant computer chips into human brains. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX tested out his Neuralink system on pigs last year, and most recently, hooked a wireless chip into a monkey’s brain and let it play video games within its mind.
Musk has now shared his intention to have Neuralink chips inserted into human brains this year, should “things go well.”
A Twitter user had written in to share that, as someone who has been paralyzed from the shoulders for 20 years, “I’m always available for clinical studies at @Neuralink.”
To which, Musk responded, “Neuralink is working super hard to ensure implant safety, and is in close communication with the FDA. If things go well, we might be able to do initial human trials later this year.”
Musk envisages for the computer interface to be able to treat neurological conditions like Alzhiemer’s, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and spinal cord injuries, but ultimately, he hopes to one day help establish reciprocity between humankind and artificial intelligence.
