Nestlé has announced that it is releasing its first vegan KitKat bar.
The plant-based option, dubbed KitKat V, aims to strike the perfect balance of crispy wafer and smooth chocolate to delight anyone with a sweet tooth.
It took two years for the plant-based chocolate to be developed. A rice-based formula will be used to mimic the milk chocolate in original KitKat bars, per Bloomberg.
The vegan option was created at the company’s confectionery research and development center in York, UK.
“One of the most common requests we see on social media is a for a vegan KitKat, so we’re delighted to be able to make that wish come true,” head of Confectionery at Nestlé, Alexander von Maillot, said in a press release.
“This is a product for everyone who wants a little more plant-based in their life!” he continued.
Von Maillot explained that sourcing for alternatives to milk chocolate can be challenging, as they have to blend well with cocoa and sugar to create a creamy texture. Using soy or almond can give the chocolate an off taste, von Maillot told Bloomberg.
Nestlé has confirmed that the vegan version of the popular chocolate treat will be rolled out later this year in “several countries across the globe.” KitKat V will be available to purchase online through the KitKat Chocolatory and selected retailers to test an expanded rollout.
