Gucci has unveiled a pair of bold sneakers that are vibrant, virtually weightless, and even cheaper than knockoffs. It looks like they have it all—until you find out you can’t wear them.
That’s because the footwear, designed by the label’s creative director Alessandro Michele with Belarusian design studio Russia, only exists in the digital world. The Virtual 25 silhouette is priced at US$8.99 on the Wanna app and purchasable for US$11.99 on the Gucci app.
The virtual sneakers can be applied to the buyer’s feet via augmented reality, as well as added to game avatars or worn in digital spaces, according to Sneaker Freaker. So the only way to convince yourself that you were wearing them in real life is if it were an Emperor’s New Clothes type of situation.
It’s also worth mentioning that the sneakers aren’t a non-fungible token (NFT) like several digital pieces out there, so there won’t just be one pair in the world.
Gucci hopes to bring more novel pieces to the digital sphere in the future.
