After a long pause from social media, former US president Donald Trump is purportedly taking matters in his own hands and launching his own social network. The move would follow his “permanent” and “indefinite” bans from Twitter and Facebook respectively.
Jason Miller, a representative of the businessman, told Fox News that Trump could be making his voice heard on “his own platform,” which is anticipated to be ready in “two to three months.”
There are no details about how the social network would look or feel, but the spokesperson shared that it “is going to be big” and believes it would “redefine the game.” He projected that “tens of millions” of members would join the platform.
Engadget points out, however, that the entrepreneur could have shot himself in the foot when he was president. After being flagged by Twitter’s fact-checker, Trump pushed for more restrictions on the Communications Decency Act’s Section 230, which aims to protect internet companies from being held legally responsible for user content. Without this separation, the site could be sued for hosting fake news or malicious content posted by users.
In addition, it would be even more challenging to find tech partners to help build the platform following the US Capitol riot. As Deadline reports, companies like Shopify and Stripe have already cut ties with Trump.
However, Miller claimed that “a lot of high-power meetings” have taken place to discuss this new platform. “It’s not just one company that’s approached the president, there have been numerous companies,” he said.
In any case, here’s hoping the new social network won’t be designed as sneakily as Trump’s re-election campaign website, which was created such that making donations, and in huge amounts at that, was the default option for supporters.
