This month, the art world was shaken as Beeple’s Everydays — The First 5000 Days JPG was auctioned off for US$69.3 million, placing it as the most expensive non-fungible token (NFT) yet.
Reproducing that sort of acclaim won’t be easy, but one can always try. To potentially get you there quicker, artists Sam Newell and Vince McKelvie have invented the ‘Beeple Generator’, a site that automatically renders 3D socio-political digital art in the style of Beeple, so you can replicate his multimillion-dollar-making formula without doing any of the work.
With its randomized mishmash of giant Elon Musk, a dabbing Doge, and other meme-worthy visuals, the hope is that you’ll one day be able to catch a collector’s eye and strike the NFT lottery yourself using open-sourced art.
Every day since 2007, Beeple—whose real name is Mike Winkelmann—has been producing a piece of art and uploading it online. Everydays — The First 5000 Days showcases a collage of artworks from his first 5,000 days of starting this challenge.
McKelvie told Input Mag that the website is more of a homage than a mockery of Beeple’s success. “I’m happy for him,” McKelvie responded. “He is an open-sourced artist, gave a lot of his work away for free with no expectation of monetary gain. I do the same thing, and I think it’s cool that he was rewarded for that.”
He added that Beeple’s daily visual commentaries aren’t really his “cup of tea,” but producing something compelling every day would be “basically impossible.”
He is currently working to “add a mint button” on the website so anyone can easily convert generated art into an NFT.
As for what the original artist thinks of this parody, he’s billed the Beeple Generator as “ABSOLUTELY F**KING GENIUS.”
ABSOLUTELY FUCKING GENIUS. 😱https://t.co/UdPdULt3vf
