LEGOs are already designed for sustainability; the bricks are meant to last generations and accommodate a plethora of ideas. One Japanese brand, however, has a different approach for downsizing carbon footprint.
Mokulock is a toy building block made from sustainably-sourced timber that can barely be used for large-scale projects. The wooden bricks, discovered by Yanko Design, are derived from smaller trees considered too thin for architectural or furniture-building purposes.
Mokulock’s answer to the LEGO features no chemical paint, finishing oil, or glue. Rather, it relies on the organic finish of trees and leverages the subtly varied tints of Japanese Cherry, Birch, Maple, Japanese Zelkova, Japanese Bigleaf Magnolia, and Hornbeam for color and texture.
The pieces are sanded down for a satisfying feel which leaves no splinters.
According to Yanko Design, wood in tactile play also comes with mental benefits, like boosting creativity and easing the nerves. Of course, the idea of getting closer to nature might be enough to while your stresses away.
