Takashi Murakami has joined the non-fungible token (NFT) market and created his first-ever NFT.
During the pandemic, Murakami watched how his children interacted on Animal Crossing: New Horizons and observed that the reality of the virtual world was changing.
“They were watching some fireworks display within the game while talking with their school friends, who they could no longer meet in person, through Zoom, admiring how beautiful it was,” he explained.
He noted the reality of “shifting values” upon seeing his children admire the beauty of the virtual world. “From then on, I started to change my ways of creative expressions and approaches entirely,” Murakami said.
Murakami teamed up with the former director of Sonic Unleashed, Yoshihisa Hashimoto, to explore the possibilities of virtual art.
The series of NFT works that transpired from their partnership features Murakami’s signature flower in 24 x 24 pixels “evoking nostalgia for Famicom (The Nintendo Entertainment System).”
The works arrive in 108 variations, “the number that signifies earthly desires in Buddhism.” Check them out here.
