Nike has successfully blocked the sale of Lil Nas X Satan Shoes for now.
The US District Court in New York has approved the apparel company’s request for a temporary restraining order against MSCHF, the art collective that collaborated with the rapper to create a pair of sneakers containing human blood.
Nike alleged that the shoes were made without the company's “approval or authorization,” Rolling Stone reported.
“MSCHF strongly believes in the freedom of expression,” the company said. “We look forward to working with Nike and the court to resolve this case in the most expeditious manner.”
MSCHF’s lawyers argued that the Satan Shoes were “not typical sneakers, but rather individually-numbered works of art.” The sneakers were a follow-up to the company’s Jesus Shoes, which were a customized version of the Nike Air Max 97 with a crucifix zipper that was released in 2019.
Only 666 pairs were made, and they cost US$1,018 each. Lil Nas X was planning to select who gets the 666th pair in a giveaway, but that plan was shelved following Nike’s lawsuit.
A temporary restraining order may be deemed too late at this point, as all but the 666th pair had been sold and the collective said that no more will be made.
Regardless, US District Judge Eric Komitee ruled three days after Nike sued MSCHF Product Studio Inc, claiming that the black-and-red, devil-themed sneakers, which carry the Nike “Swoosh” logo, infringed its trademarks.
