Parents who are caring for children and managing their household full-time can now make those jobs official on their online résumés.
LinkedIn has introduced new titles—"Stay-at-home mom,” “Stay-at-home dad,” and “Stay-at-home parents”—on its platform as part of a larger undertaking by the networking site to allow people to better detail months or years away from the paid workforce.
Other options being included are “caretaker,” “homemaker” and “mom” or “dad.”
LinkedIn also has plans for a new “employment gaps” field, where users can pick options such as “sabbatical,” “personal leave,” or “parental leave,” a spokesperson for LinkedIn said.
Fortune magazine reported these changes by the platform when LinkedIn was asked to comment on a Medium article written by Heather Bolen, which called on it to expand its job title options. Bolen stated that these options could help “normalize” résumé gaps.
“It’s time for employers to accept that careers are often non-linear and to provide improved policies for remote work, flex time, and paid family leave,” she wrote. “And it’s time for job seekers to not feel like they must skirt around employment gaps, lest be frozen out.”
These options may be welcoming news to many parents out there, especially mothers, amid the pandemic.
In 2020, women had to leave the workforce to bear the brunt of child care duties at home. Between March and April last year, “some 3.5 million mothers living with school-age children left active work — either shifting into paid or unpaid leave, losing their job, or exiting the labor market all together,” according to a recent report from the US Census Bureau.
I see more and more women listing "stay-at-home mom" as a job on their LinkedIn pages to address career gaps, and I absolutely love it. ("I consistently met and exceeded expectations in an ambiguous, dynamic, and fast paced environment without clear direction from management.")💪
