Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli has spoken out about an image from the brand’s latest campaign, which has sent social media users into a frenzy.
Valentino released a new Collezione Milano campaign over the weekend. Shot by photographer Michael Bailey-Gates, one of the images is a self-portrait of the photographer and model, showing him nude and with a long flowy mane while posing with a Valentino rockstud bag.
The image garnered negative comments from multiple social media users. Users took aim at Bailey-Gates androgynous and gender-fluid appearance while others posted vomit emojis in the comments section. To date, the image currently has over 10,000 comments.
It is still unclear why the image was deemed “offensive” to many.
In response to the backlash, Piccioli shared a message on his personal account, condemning the hateful comments.
“Hate is not an expression, hate is a reaction to fear and fear can easily turn into violence, which can be either a comment or an aggression to two guys kissing in a subway,” he wrote. “This picture is a self-portrait of a young beautiful man and evil is in the eye of the beholder, not in his naked body.”
Many people applauded Piccioli’s message, including Indya Moore and photographers Inez and Vinoodh.
